Death, Burial, and Mourning

Funerals are a rite of passage that has constantly delivered with a family of initiatory thoughts which are sadness, grief, disappointment, and fear. They have constantly affected every person involved, which includes the deceased. Death has constantly been a dreaded tournament and in the Batswana culture, it is now not solely simply a family depend but also entails the complete community. In this essay, I am going to examine and contrast the three phases of the Rites of Passage, focusing extra on the transitional section in relation to the death, mourning, and burial cultural practices that my household has long gone through by looking extra at the transitional phase.

A rite of passage is a ceremony or ritual of the passage which happens when a character leaves one crew to enter another. It entails a big trade-off reputation in society. Arnold van Gennep describes the three phases of transition that accompany a rite de passage which is marked by using separation, transition, and reincorporation (Gennep, 1909) The passing of my maternal grandmother came as a shock to my whole family, together including myself. He was the one who provided us with a vicinity of emotional refuge whereby everyone may want to share the depths of their soul with him that no one else had the privilege of knowing. Death and burial amongst the Batswana are considered as a time of team spirit and unity. Our burial rites have a dual reason which firstly consists of isolating (the first phase) the deceased in this case my dead, maternal grandmother as painfully as maybe from the dwelling and ushering her into a liminal waiting duration (transitional phase) which resulted in my household and I have to damage any emotional bonds that we had with my him.

Immediately after my grandfather exhaled his ultimate breath, my family despatched out messages to inform all the relatives and neighbors about his death. Within a day, human beings along with household participants and contributors of the neighborhood commenced to collect at the house whereby the older female comforted the lady contributors of the family, the youthful female undertook all the work including myself and the guys sat in distinctive areas round the yard. All the furniture was once eliminated from the room he slept in and solely a mattress used to be positioned on the floor which used to be intended for my grandmother. The mattress signified the truth that she had to preserve the spirit of my late grandfather’s company. She ought to solely leave the room to go to the rest room and her meals were once served in the room. My grandmother had to spend a whole lot of her time lying down, be included in a blanket, and wear a head scarf like a motsetsi (a female who is in confinement). My grandfathers male loved ones were in manage of the pre-burial arrangements which include making the decision to take his physique to a funeral parlor of their desire which had to provide first-rate funeral services, deciding on a coffin, transport, catering, and the design of the burial program as supported via the essential selections that are made via guys in pre-burial proceedings (McNeill, 2020). There is more than one signifier such as the widow sporting black garb to show that she is mourning the loss of her husband and this serves as a part of the liminal phase which supports Victor Turners (2002) argument of these being in a liminal section being composed through symbols.
