Although this is a subject of a very long debate, I believe that men and women can form platonic friendships. In the clip from When Harry Met Sally, Billy Crystals character, Harry, claims that the reason men and women cannot be friends is that sex always gets in the way. He reasons that although they do not always have to actually commit the act, the mere thought or desire that is present makes platonic friendship impossible.
To suggest that friendship will always be ruined by sex is insulting to humanity, as it suggests that it has not surpassed its primitive urges and people are only capable of thinking of reproduction. Furthermore, it raises the issue of friendship between the members of the LGBTQ+ community would they be, by the same logic, incapable of creating platonic bonds out of the possibility of attractiveness? Friendships between men and women are not only possible but beneficial for both parties. There are fundamental differences between the people of different sexes and/or genders and having access to a point of view that differs from ones own can help broaden horizons. Moreover, many experiences are unique for men and women, and being able to learn about them directly from the affected party can be helpful in understanding them and others, as well as developing as an individual.
