Drugs are substances that change a persons mental or physical state. Moreover, drugs can also affect the way our body and mind function. Numerous occurrences have been reported on social media and television that teenagers are using prohibited drugs. The usage of illegal drugs has become uncontrollable. The age when the drug users first tried to use illegal drugs, around forty-nine percent (48.85%) of the reported cases belong to the age group of 15-19 years old. It is very alarming considering that drug addiction usually began among the youth.

Drug addiction has become a worldwide problem, especially in todays generation. It is estimated that approximately 60,000 teenagers are dealing with illegal drugs. Many teenagers become dependent on different substances such as cocaine, meth, marijuana, heroin, etc. There are different reasons why teenagers use drugs. The first reason why young people use illegal drugs is because of enjoyment. Many teenagers are assuming that using these substances is often pleasurable for them. They do not consider it as negative and damaging to their mental and physical health. The second reason is they want to fit in the society that they belong. They consider drugs as a pass to help them fit into their environment. In addition, teenagers use prohibited drugs because of the environment they live in. In most countries, many communities are suffering because of poverty and the high unemployment rate. They use or sell drugs in exchange for money because they recognize the financial advantage of prohibited drugs. Thirdly, youths think that taking illegal drugs is a way to relieve the stress that they are feeling. They are not aware that illegal drugs are the way to deal with stress. It is harmful since these substances change the way you think and function, which may lead to depression and other mental illnesses. The fourth reason is that teenagers use prohibited drugs simply because of curiosity. They are curious about what it feels like to take these drugs because of what they see and what they hear from others. Lastly, teenagers use prohibited drugs because of personal problems. Some teenagers use illegal drugs because they believe that taking them will lessen the pain, trauma, and stress they feel caused by different factors such as bad relationships among their families, friends, or lovers. For them, taking these drugs is the way to escape their problems.

We should encourage teenagers to not try illegal drugs and explain to them that using prohibited drugs can destroy their mental, physical, and social life. They need to understand that illegal drugs do not have a positive effect on their life. Also, they need to attend seminars or talk about the harmful effects of using these substances. They also need strong parental guidance. These teenagers need someone to talk to. Parents must be aware of the sudden changes in the behavior of their child. If they noticed something wrong, they should talk to them and set an example. Teenagers need to enjoy what life has to offer. Using drugs is not the way to relieve stress and they must be fully aware that drugs do not provide genuine happiness.
