People living different lives can sometimes result in less freedom such as, restrictions. A group of people and individuals are completely different. For example, its easier to live by the standards of what people identify as beautiful, but it comes with limitations. A group of people who look at things the same way will all be the same way. Theres no individuality. When youre individual it tends to be more difficult to have an identity that is one of a kind, but its better. You have more freedom. Identity, a poem by Julio Noboa Polanco, talks about flowers and weeds. He uses figurative language to show the differences of a group of people and individuals.

Julio tells the reader in his poem that weeds are independent and have more freedom. He states, If I could stand alone, strong and free, Id be a tall ugly weed. This particular quote from the poem means that weeds are strong. Theyre representing individuals who are being themselves instead of trying to please or meet the expectations of the world, or society. Being yourself shows that you have a very unique identity. Theres no one trying to modify you and youre not trying to fit in. Another quote from this poem that really stuck out states, Id rather be a tall, ugly weed, clinging on cliffs, like an eagle wind-wavering above high, jagged rocks. Weeds cling on cliffs by themselves which shows that individuals are also by themselves. They may not be as beautiful as a flower but theres no one changing them and theyre not potted in dirt with many other flowers. I said all of this just to say that the weeds represent individuality and how individuals receive more freedom.

The last quote that stood out to me was, Growing in clusters in the fertile valley, where theyre praised, handled, and plucked by greedy, human hands. This quote is saying that flowers are modified. They dont have freedom but if you relate this to humans it will make a lot of sense. If you want to be seen, stuck in a crowd of many other people, or even trying to impress them, youre being who they want you to be. Youre also living by the standards of what they believe is unique and pretty. Its not what you believe in. Standing out and being who you believe you really are is important. Id rather be different than to be the same and have no freedom. This poem by Julio is very deep but it takes a lot to fully know and understand what hes saying. Be yourself always and live for you, no one else.

Being yourself gives you a lot of freedom. Society wants to define us, make everyone flawless, and have good looks but this causes you to lose freedom. You gain a tremendous amount of independence when you are unique , which comes from being yourself.
