In my speech I will represent the prosecution of Grendel in this case. Grendel is guilty of murderous crimes, for which the penalty is death. I will do this by presenting facts and evidence that prove Grendel is guilty of murderous crimes.
For the past twelve years, Grendel has filled the Danes with terror as he killed their men. He killed without guilt and even took joy in tormenting and eating them. Grendel killed hundreds of people and never once did he feel a drop of guilt. He tormented his victims before killing them and eating them. Grendel knew what he was doing and knew that he was sending innocent people to their death, but did not care. Killing without guilt is a monstrous act. We are told throughout most of our lives that killing is without reason is wrong and it is fixed in us that if we kill, we should feel guilty about what we have done. Grendel had no guilt. He did not care that he was killing innocent people who did not deserve to die. Therefore, Grendels crimes were monstrous.
Grendel did not only have any guilt about killing innocent people, but he also enjoyed what he was doing. He enjoyed ripping people apart and eating them. Having no guilt is one thing, but when someone takes joy in killing, they are even more monstrous. Grendel enjoyed killing very much. He enjoyed it so much that he would plan out what he would do to his victims. His murders were planned, not just crimes of passion. He knew very well what he was doing.
If Grendel had a violent and filled with rage nature that is presumably genetic if he wanted to, he could have repressed it. A violent and rage-filled nature is not an excuse, especially when it can be repressed and controlled. However, did Grendel try to control his rage? No, he did not.
Some might wonder whether this was done in self-defense because Hrothgars men attacked him first. Killing can never be justified, but it is more reasonable if you were acting in self-defense. But Grendel was not acting in self-defense. He had spells placed upon him so he was invulnerable to weapons. Not only was he invulnerable to weapons, but Grendel was also very strong, so his victims did not have a chance at fighting him. His victims were not attacking him rather, he was attacking them. So, even if they attacked Grendel, they were just trying to defend themselves against him.
Some might also think Grendel is almost like an animal that acts purely on instinct, right? Wrong. Grendel is an intellectual being, capable of rationalization, and thought. Grendel is an intellectual being able to control his actions, and he is killing other intelligent beings and that is monstrous. Grendel is not human, like his victims, but he is human-like, in the fact that he can think and rationalize. He is nothing like a feeble-minded animal. Animals cannot think as humans can and are not rational beings. Animals are guided by their natures. They kill only because they need to. Grendel is not an animal and he is responsible for his monstrous actions and should be executed. Not only is Grendel an intellectual being, but he is aware that he can choose whether or not to kill. He had a choice whether or not to kill Hrothgars men. Grendel chose to kill them several times. When you are choosing to kill repeatedly it is intentional and it is a monstrous action.
I have presented to you overwhelming evidence that Grendel is certainly without a doubt, guilty of murderous crimes. I urge you to go over, the evidence that has been shown to you and realize that Grendel is guilty. He has killed countless people without guilt and he enjoyed the killings. Grendel is an intellectual being capable of rationalization and thought, not an animal, and intellectual beings can control their actions. Grendel also did not attack and kill Hrothgars men as self-defense, he is invulnerable to weapons and had a major advantage over humans. He knew what he was doing, but did that stop him? No. Are these the actions of an innocent? No, they are not. Grendel deserves the death penalty.
