Functional ability and health disparity are some of the challenges experienced by many individuals in most developed countries. However, only a few studies have been conducted to examine the trends of these challenges. The main aim of those studies is to find out the strategies that can be implemented to reduce health disparity. This paper aims to discuss health disparities and the way nurses reduce them. In addition, it discusses a plan to improve care for Terrell Wallace, who has sickle cell disease.
Health Disparities
Health disparities occur when individuals cannot access equal healthcare services. They are directly related to the unequal distribution of environmental, political, economic, and social resources (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017). In such cases, nurses play a significant role in decreasing the rate of health disparities. First, nurses advocate for patients rights, distressing- screening, and appropriate resources to reduce disparities (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017). Second, nurses develop various community-based events and projects to improve health equality.
Plan to Improve Care for Terrell Wallace
Terrell Wallace is an African American child with sickle cell disease. He mostly depends on his parents, who take care of him. Terrells diet is high in sodium because he is an African American. Therefore, there is a need to develop a nursing care plan to improve his health. First, the nurse should educate Terrells parents on how they should speak to him after noticing the signs of being unwell. Additionally, the caregivers are supposed to develop a balanced diet plan and regular exercises to play a significant role in maintaining his childhood.
Conclusion
In conclusion, functional ability and health disparity are some of the health challenges in most developed countries. Nurses play the role of reducing health disparities in various ways. They advocate for patients and create community-based events and projects to decrease health disparities. Terrell Wallace is an African American child with sickle cell disease. A balanced diet plan and regular exercises can improve care for Terrell Wallace.
