In January 2017, my family and I were going to India for two weeks. We were excited to go to India as it had been more than a year since our last visit. As soon as we boarded the plane, I rushed to my seat, which was a window seat. In front of me, in the window seat, was a boy of about eleven years, and in the other two seats were his younger sister, in the middle seat and younger brother, in the aisle seat. Their parents were seated across the aisle. About half an hour after takeoff, the boy in front of me reclined his seat, with which I was fine. But after sometime, he reclined his seat even more, which caused the seat to cover the window and block my view. I couldnt see anything outside the window and after sometime my knees began to hurt too. Just then his sister started throwing tantrums and none of her brothers cared. At this point, I wanted to pour water on their heads. As their mother turned towards her children, she saw me talking to my mother, with a frustrated and annoyed face, pointing at the seat in front of me. She understood what I was talking about and asked her son to pull the seat a little, to which he replied no and put on his headphones, looking out of the window. He started reclining his seat more and this time I kept my head on the seat to push it in the front. This continued for sometime before I gave up. In the end, I was physically and mentally exhausted and all I wanted was to get out of the airplane. Two weeks later, we were in the airport, waiting in a line to board the flight back to Oman, and I noticed that it was the same family from the previous flight, in front of us. All I could do was pray that they dont sit in front of me.

People in front of me in the airplane annoy me the most. My biggest pet-peeve is when they recline their seats more than necessary. They recline their seats all the way to the persons lap, just to give themselves more room, not thinking about the person sitting behind them. As a person, who hates airplanes and is uncomfortable flying, the last thing I are aggravating and selfish people, who clearly lack airplane etiquettes.

In one flight, the passenger in front of me reclined his seat when I was having my meal, which caused the tray table to squish against me and made it difficult for me to even eat. As a person who fears flying, I constantly need to look out of the window, but its impossible if the view the blocked. When the person reclines their seat the entertainment screen is literally pushed into the other person’s face and it becomes really difficult to watch the tv screen from the close distance. For people with long legs, their knees start to hurt and cramp in the congested area.

The best solution to all these problems is politely requesting the person to put the seat back up slightly, informing them about the problems they are causing. If the person is rude and not listening, one can request the aircrew to do so. As a person who avoids confrontations on airplanes, I try my best to get the very front seats. These seats have no one in front of them and they also have extra leg room.

Seat recliners cause a lot of problems to the passengers sitting behind them, and are a also a major reason for fights during flights. People should be more considerate to not recline their seats too much and cause inconvenience to the person sitting behind them.
