My interest in helping others and social work has not appeared from nowhere. I have only a few clear memories from my early childhood, and one of them is when me and my parents were standing on the crosswalk and suddenly saw a couple of street dogs. One of them was really nice and it seemed like not far ago it was a favorite home pet of someone. But at the moment when I saw them, they were looking just terrible: all dirty, hungry and quite angry. When I asked my parents to go and help these dogs, my father said that it is dangerous as street dogs can be infected, and if they bite me, we will have to go to the hospital. I clearly remember that I did not understand the whole ground of this argumentation of why we just cannot help these poor dogs. After a while, when I grew up a bit (I suppose that I was about 8-9 years old), I discovered that there are not only poor animals, but also poor people who need help. Probably, it was some news story about homeless dinners or something like that. I was shocked by this line of people that looked like endless, and especially by their eyes. At home, I get used to people who always smile, joke, or at least almost always have a good mood and happy eyes. But from the TV screen I saw dozens and dozens of people who had nothing in their eyes except pain, tiredness and disappointment. This time I understand that something inside me protests against such things and I want to help such people as much as I can.
This time my aunt helped me a lot as she was the social volunteer and she agreed to take me with her to different social events. We were helping homeless animals by feeding them, finding shelters for them or even new owners. When I became a little older, we together with my aunt participated in organizing of dinners for the homeless, visiting orphanages, organizing of charity fairs, etc. My aunt contributed a lot to my social work experience. Of course, at the same time, we had some events and separate lessons at school, where we were getting known about different aspects of social work, its directions, practices, etc. I was extremely interested in this kind of things and always attended all of them.
During my experience of social work, I have seen a lot of things. I assume that I am aged enough and have a required practical experience to continue exploring the social work sphere on more serious and professional basis. I think that I gained the most important in social work, namely the understanding of how it should be. The first important thing I understood is that your heart always has to be opened. Social work is not a sphere where you help wealthy and happy people. Every person who asks you for such help or needs such help had a significant trouble in his life. Every single person requires exceptional and personal approach. Every problem is unique. Often people who ask for a help have a very hard life, and because of that, they get used to express their thoughts and feelings in brutal and insulting manner. You need to be ready to face this kind of things and always keep your heart opened. The second important thing I understood is that every person is equal. No matter whom you are helping and what trouble this person had or what things heshe has done, you need to do as much as possible to help. In turn, if you are waiting from the persons whom you help some mental and behavioral growth, you also need always to grow. You need to improve your skill, gain new knowledge, analyze the world social work projects and practice, etc., to find something new, useful and applicable to your particular project. If you want to be not just a volunteer, but a real social worker, you have to improve yourself after every person that you helped.
At this moment, I would like to go forward with child welfare projects. From all the persons who need help, children are the most unprotected and indigent group. Moreover, it is much easier to convince children start changing their life than adults, because children have not gained a lot of bad or false experience and always ready to help you or others.
I am sure I will be a good social worker because I really like it, because I really enjoy helping others. That is the most important thing in every profession of sphere to love it. Confucius said: Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. That is exactly my strategy. I am extremely interested in every kind of connection of traditional social work and modern technologies, especially in Internet-based social projects and crowdfunding. I am sure that social workers who will master the techniques of Internet marketing and SMM for the management and other purposes of social work projects will be social work leaders of the future. Additionally, I am found of self-education and researching about new international or foreign initiatives and projects regarding social work. Along with my passion and strong logical thinking skills, they form a powerful basis for developing of my personal qualities and abilities as a social worker and a person who truly helps.
