Nursing is a profession that focuses on the care of individuals, families, and communities. It involves skilled professionals whose goal is to provide optimal health and quality of life to their patients. Nurses may be different from other healthcare professionals in terms of their approach to patient care and scope of practice. The public image of nurses has been shaped over the years. This essay will briefly discuss nursing as an art and as a science.

Despite the ongoing debate about whether nursing is an art or a science, I believe that nursing can be described as both an art and a science. The skills and knowledge that nurses must possess in order to perform their duties are what are considered art. As an art, nurses enhance the ability to sense and experience the world around them. They also turn situations into opportunities for positive health change in the lives of their patients. An example is that when a nurse accompanies a patient to provide care, she must be equipped with the skill and knowledge to do so.

Nursing as a science is the ability of nurses to understand the importance of knowing various medical terms and procedures that are involved in the treatment of a patient. As an example, if a new doctor were to treat a diabetic patient for symptoms. A nurse working under that doctor would have worked with diabetic patients in the past and immediately know that the patient does not have an infection just by assessing the patient. They could treat the patient by raising the blood sugar level by providing the patient with the right types of food. The science in this example is that the nurse had the knowledge to understand the symptoms of the patient.

To summarize, nursing is a combination of art and science. One of the most important elements that nurses have to master is their ability to treat their patients as valued human beings. All nurses should consider the meaning of caring for their patients and develop strategies to integrate it into their professional activities. A caring environment helps patients feel safe, comfortable, and supported during their stay. When caring is present, feelings of comfort and hospitality, of being at ease and of being healed are being warmly felt by their patients hearts. Also, it would allow nurses to gain their patients absolute trust; this trust would improve clinical outcomes, and financial outcomes, and empower patients to improve their quality of life.
