It was a bright summer day in Ely, Iowa when Johnny came over. We had a bonfire the night he arrived, and the next day, the plan was to play basketball and then go fishing. The next morning, it didnt take long before we decided it was too hot to do much of anything that involved being active. After going inside and eating some popsicles, we went off looking for something to do.

First, we went to the gas station to get a jug of sweet tea so that we wouldnt be thirsty, and some beef sticks to snack on. After getting all the other essential supplies, we headed to the city park to try to catch some fish in the community pond. We stayed there for about an hour and caught a few decent bluegills and sunfish, but with no shade, I was getting hot, and Johnny was getting sunburnt. We packed up our fishing poles and our tackle, and before we left, I threw my cast net a couple of times, catching two small bass and a baby turtle. All the fish were thrown back, and then we headed to my grandmas house to catch some minnows in her creek.

We grabbed some butterfly nets and jumped into the water. We spent about 5 minutes looking for minnows before we decided to just swim. We were having fun and staying cool, but we wanted to find a deeper spot where we could dive. I told my grandma what our plans were, and then we set off in search of a better swimming hole. We walked downstream for a little way, and then we got hungry, so we went back to the house to get some summer sausage and popsicles. After fueling up, we went back to the creek, and, once again, started walking downstream. We went about a mile, and we were just about ready to turn around when we heard some noise around the next bend. We went to investigate and found a waterfall with a deep pool at the bottom. We did what any reasonable person would do, which is jump off of the waterfall. We found out that there were some small rocks at the bottom, but we got them out and created the perfect swimming hole by making a path back to the top of the waterfall.

We spent about two hours jumping off the waterfall and then headed back to the house. We saw lots of baby catfish on the way, which made us want to catch some big ones. We loaded all the equipment into my truck and had my grandma take us to one of Steve Millers ponds in his cattle pasture. I threw my kayak in the water and set 5 jugs along the shore. We had a slow start, but once the sun started to go down, we started getting bites. We ended up catching 5 channel catfish and one bass. We threw the bass back, and we took the catfish home. I threw 2 in the creek so that we could catch them again next year, and I the other three I cleaned. I tried some of the meat for Johnny and me to eat, and the rest went in the freezer.

It had been a fun day, and we were both pretty tired. We decided that Johnny would stay another night so that he could get sleep, and the next day his dad would pick him up. We watched the movie Stepbrothers and then we went to sleep. The next day we went fishing early in the morning and then he headed home. I was still tired, so I took a nap and then I made the rest of the catfish for lunch.
