How far is too much? I’d like to start off by asking you this question. Not just for the sake of confusing you all, but to challenge your view on what you think is okay to take advantage of.

As we all know, social media was designed as a platform that offered fast and effective communication between yourself and other users. For users today, it has become a life-threatening scaffold, and no one saw it coming. Not only does social media provide unrealistic views on life, it has become invasive, creates general addiction, and has provided a space for harassment to occur.

Social media has suffered from the very thing that made it great. It practically became free for everyone to communicate their ideas. Good or bad. As a result, an open-door way for trolls, bullies and cheats to take over the once innocent form of communication.

Our lives have been transformed into a fight to keep social media from affecting our own identity. This will always be an ongoing battle. Social media has become such a major part of everyone’s daily routine that our basic skills of face-to-face communication has been stripped away from us. In a simple term: it has ruined all aspects of our lives.

There’s an argument that social media has a lot of potential. I believe it has an extensive amount of potential, but it will never be reached. With constant harassment whenever people are given the chance, social media will never reach its ‘safe’ way of communicating, as well as a so called ‘safe’ place for expressing ourselves and our own opinions. When people decide to use social media as a form of cyberbullying, its potential to communicate effectively and bring people together changes to a weapon that tears people and relationships apart.

Social media is seen as just fun and games until your own reputation is ruined, and one simple mistake cannot be hidden. There is no way out. We as a society have landed in a trap and we are too blinded to see the consequences.

When we think of social media, we automatically think of Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram. All of which are good forms of communication and ways to express ourselves. However, we do not see these as a form of media that leads teenagers to suicide, depression and anxiety. Social media is now something that has become a major factor of an increase in school absences and teenage suicide. Now, I am not saying teenagers are the only group affected by this, anyone and everyone who uses social media is at risk.

Social media is a monster. It is now seen as frightening, rather than the friendly, safe and positive platform it was created to be. There is no longer safety when referring to the dangers of social media. Our self-esteem is now purely built on the number of comments and likes a picture gets.

Of course, this form of media was designed for basic communication and expression of one’s self, however the society we are a part of has taken away the innocence. Many people have lost more than gained. Lost self-esteem, loss of basic communication skills, and for those who initiate the harassment and cyberbullying, loss of respect and dignity.
