Climate Change as a Topic

Climate change is an environmental problem that relates to an increase in the Earths average surface temperature. The Earths average surface temperature gradual increment refers to global warming, which is the main problem related to climate change. This has been evidenced by research over the last few decades, and it is now widely accepted by the scientific community that human activities are contributing to climate change. There are a several ways in which humans can contribute to climate change, for example, transportation, fossil fuel combustion, manufacturing processes, and agriculture activities (Abdulkadir et al., 2017). Greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane trap heat in the atmosphere, which can lead to an overall warming of the planet.

My Beliefs, Assumptions, and Values on the Topic

The belief and assumption that human activities are great contributors to climate change is something that I hold strongly. This belief comes from the overwhelming evidence that scientists have analyzed, showing that the Earths average temperature is rising and that human activities lead to warming trends (Abdulkadir et al., 2017). I also assume that taking care of the environment is a moral responsibility for humans, and that means doing everything to reduce the carbon footprint. The values I have related to climate change include a strong sense of responsibility to future generations. Therefore, we should work towards climate change effects mitigation and be an example to the rest of the world. My other core value is environmentalism, which holds that as humans, we have a moral duty to ensure environmental protection.

Topic Relevance to Modern Society

Climate change is relevant to modern society because it affects humans in multiple ways. For example, property damage, displacement of people, and deaths are the consequences of extreme weather conditions which are a result of climate change (Abdulkadir et al., 2017). It can also cause wildfires, droughts, and hurricanes, which are unfavorable for living things. Additionally, climate change can impact our food supply as crop yields decline and pests and diseases become more prevalent in a warmer world.
