Oyez has done incredible job of putting this entire website together. Go through all of it; listen to all the audio. There are nine sections.
This assignment will be two parts (submitted together).
First:
Write a 300-400 word summary of what you learned. Be very specific with your details to support your claims of what you learned. Make sure to answer what you learned about the “case for segregation”, “precedents”, and the “deliberations”.

Second:
This will be a very personal answer. You will not be graded your personal thoughts. You’re going to be graded on ability to define your answer and support for your statements.
Given the current tide of Christian Nationalism (even if you’re not Christian this affects you too and no, I’m not putting Christians on blast but there’s a changing tide when states are now requiring the 10 commandments to be posted in classrooms or requiring the Bible to be taught while passing some very extreme laws targeting very specific groups of people), I want you to think about the following statements.
“Jesus is the refugee. The child in Gaza. The transgender co-worker. The migrant by the barbwire. The kid with no lunch money. The man on death row. The single mom with two jobs. The neighbor with a disability. The friend with an addiction. How you treat them, is how you treat Jesus”.
“If you’re not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.” Malcolm X.
“First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me”    Pastor Martin Niemöller
After pondering those quotes. I want you to think about the following questions.
When did we become afraid to speak up against injustice?
I’m not referring to internet courage and fighting with some random person on X (Twitter) or Facebook. I am referring to every day interactions.
When did we become so brazen in our hatred?
Think about all the things President Trump has said about immigrants and people cheer, applaud, shower him with praise, repeat it and worse, believe it.
When did we become silent?
The LBGTQ+ community and women being denied the basic right to healthcare (when a woman must be at the 90/10 (only a 10 percent probability of survival) mark before doctors can intervene in a pregnancy is a denial of healthcare).
For the second part of your assignment, I want you to answer the following question. It must be a minimum of 400 words.
Do you have courage? Could you cast away everything you believe in and fight to protect another group of people? Would you be willing to lose everything to fight against injustice?
Your answer here will be very personal. I am only grading you on how clearly you define your answer and how you support your answer. Above everything, I want you to be 100% honest in this answer. Think about what I am asking. Could you lose everything? Do you have the courage demonstrated in the feminist movement? The Civil Rights movement? The Gay movement of the 1980’s? Etc.
