Your paper should be about 2 pages double-spaced (approximately 400-500 words). It is OK with me if you want to turn in something longer. (You also have the freedom to turn in something shorter, but if it is substantially shorter, it is probably not possible to do an excellent job of addressing the topic thoughtfully).
When referring to information learned in this class, please cite the reading or video (author/source and date in parentheses). It is not necessary to do outside reading for this assignment; however, if you refer to anything that is not required reading from class (whether it is a website or something in print), include that reference information in a bibliography.
Topics for Unit 5 Paper
1. Challenging Stereotypes of Teens
After reading Telzer et al.’s research review article, Challenging stereotypes of teens:write about the following:
a. According to the authors, what are some of the negative stereotypes of teenagers? Why are these dangerous to teens and to society?
b. What are some of the positive aspects of “peer pressure” or social norms for adolescents?
c. How could we leverage the social motivations of adolescents with regard to prosocial behavior? Please share your ideas with regard to changes we could make in schools and neighborhoods, or over mainstream media and social media.
2. Letter to Professional Working with Adolescents
For this option, you will write a note with advice to someone who works with adolescents (for example, a teacher, counselor, nurse, doctor, etc.).
In this letter, focus on sharing what you have learned about adolescent brain development and mental health.
Although this paper is in the format of a letter, please cite references because it is also a class assignment.
3. Reflections on HDEV 312
Reflect on what you have learned in this course on adolescence and emerging adulthood.
Describe three things you have learned that stand out for you. (Be sure to cite relevant readings/videos).
How can you apply this knowledge in your personal life, or present or future career?
How could schools, healthcare, the juvenile justice system, or other aspects of society be improved by applying this knowledge?
4. Other Topics
Please talk to or email me ahead of time if you have a different idea for what to write about for your unit paper, that would address biological or cognitive development in adolescence or emerging adulthood, or development in adolescence and emerging adulthood more broadly.
5. Other Formats
Please talk to or email me ahead of time if you would like to turn in something other than a paper – for example, if you would prefer to give a presentation or create a video, etc. It would still need to address biological or cognitive development in adolescence or emerging adulthood, or development in adolescence and emerging adulthood more broadly.
