For this project, you will conduct an in-depth investigation into a national or international
outbreak of your choice (historical or current) and create a short PowerPoint presentation
(approximately 10 minutes in length). This project will allow you to apply epidemiological
concepts to a real-world scenario, enhancing your understanding of outbreak investigation and
public health response.
The presentation objectives are as follows: 1) Summarize the outbreak – include key details
about time, place, population, and impact 2) Explain the cause of the outbreak 3) List the
initial indicators that suggested an outbreak 4) Identify what control measures were
implemented and the challenges faced 5) Discuss the outcome of the outbreak – provide an
update on its current status
You will need to record the presentation as if you were presenting live in class (presenter on
screen). You may use Panopto or other applications of your choice to record the presentation.
Please include the following slides:
1. Title Slide – title of presentation, your name, course title, and the date
2. Summary of the Outbreak – brief overview of event including time period
(dates/duration); location; population impacted (demographics); and number of cases
and deaths (if any)
3. Cause and Determination – describe pathogen and source of the outbreak; explain
how public health officials identified the cause, including methods used (e.g., interviews,
laboratory tests)
4. Initial Indicators – discuss initial “red flags” that indicated an outbreak (e.g., unusual
number of cases, specific symptoms)
5. Control Measures and Challenges – outline control measures implemented by public
health officials; describe challenges implementing measures (e.g., resource limitations,
public resistance)
6. Outcome or Current Status – summarize outcome of the outbreak or if ongoing
provide an update on its current status.
Then create a fact sheet is an informational handout that concisely summarizes important pieces of
information about a certain topic rather than a formal style paper. You will develop a 1-page (front and back) fact sheet.
Please make sure to include the following information on your fact sheet:
• Description of the topic (e.g., disease, condition, policy, etc.)
• The population(s) impacted
• Why the topic is important to public health
• Programs or initiatives in place to address the situation or improve the problem
Please ensure your fact sheet is easily readable (e.g., appropriate reading level, high contrast
colors, clear type face, and adequate font size). A minimum of 3 images are required.
Information used to develop the fact sheet must be collected from credible sources. Sources
must be cited appropriately on the bottom of the back page in small print.
