SHORT RESEARCH PAPER GUIDELINES The purpose of the short research paper is to provide a review of a particular “hot topic” in Family Science Human Development. Your goal is to demonstrate competence using the information available with 2 scholarly sources in APA format. YOU MAY ONLY UTILIZE SCHOLARLY SOURCES. This assignment is broken into a series of steps to help you produce a well-organized, well-documented and well-integrated short 3-page research paper due near the end of the semester. STEP 1. RESEARCH TOPIC & TOPIC STATEMENT Research Topic: Pick a topic in Family Science Human Development that: a) reflects a current trend in Family Studies (i.e., a hot topic) and b) you are particularly interested to learn more about. The topic must clearly address issues related to families or to the functioning and development of families. Feel free to e-mail me if you need help developing a research topic. Topic Statement: A brief statement describing your chosen research topic. A topic statement is 2-3 sentences that explain, in a nutshell, what your paper is about. At this stage, this statement can be broad since you may not be sure yet of the specific emphasis of your paper. Begin your topic statement with “This paper will explore…” STEP 2. GATHER SCHOLARLY SOURCES Two scholarly sources are required to write your 3-page content for your research paper using APA Format for citations and works cited page. Some basic rules to remember: A scholarly source only includes research or professional journal articles such as Journal of Marriage and Family. It does not include websites (ie. Wikipedia or Google Scholar), or books, newspapers, or popular magazines. *** Points will be deducted for including non-scholarly source. Use two different scholarly journal sources. Example: Journal of Marriage and Family; Journal of Family Issues; Journal of Child and Family Studies; Journal of Family Psychology; Couple and Family Psychology; The Family Journal; Journal of Divorce and Remarriage. Sources should be current – no more than 10 years old unless approved by instructor in advance. Formatting Throughout: 12-point Times New Roman, double-spaced, 1” margins. You must use APA-style in your in-text writing, including citations, headings, and references. (Author last name, date) or Author’s name (date). STEP 3. USE TWO SCHOLARLY SOURCES TO PROVIDE A SUMMARY OF THE RESEARCH. YOU MUST USE APA CITATIONS 2X PER PARAGRAPH. STEP 4. RESEARCH PAPER – DRAFT (OPTIONAL) – This is optional. You may turn in a draft of your research paper for some preliminary feedback. Please consider utilizing the feedback to strengthen your final research paper. STEP 5. RESEARCH PAPER – FINAL 100 pts You are writing a research paper (3 content pages, excluding title page/Works Cited page) about your chosen “hot topic” in Family Science Human Development. This research paper should not include: a) personal experiences or opinions, b) information about methods or analysis strategies, and c) articles summarized without the benefit of integration. Some guidelines: Focus on three aspects/subtopics/themes of your research topic. [Example: If you picked the research topic of “Child abuse and neglect,” one aspect is the negative impact of child abuse on children’s development.] Read all your scholarly sources and integrate the findings from these sources. Don’t just take the info from the literature review of the sources. Outline/ structure your paper. STRUCTURE OF YOUR APA-STYLE RESEARCH PAPER Cover page Must include your full name, title of your paper and university affiliation in the center. Must be formatted according to APA-style. Opening paragraph The opening paragraph describes the importance and relevance of this topic. State the link between your topic and issues related to families or to the functioning and development of families. Your topic statement should be included in the opening paragraph. This paper will explore… BODY OF THE PAPER- USE THREE THEMES OR KEY POINTS Key point 1 Themes are your subheadings (i.e., don’t label them as ‘Themes’) Start each theme with a brief sentence about what you will be talking about. Include the information from your scholarly sources that is relevant to the theme. Paraphrasing is a primary writing technique in APA-style research paper. AVOID using direct quotes, if possible. Key point 2 Key point 3 CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH Restate the importance and relevance of your research topic. Provide a paragraph summary of your paper. Include 1-2 sentences on either a) how research on this topic may be improved (i.e., how else can we learn better about this topic), or b) what future research questions still need to be answered (i.e., what else do we not know about this topic). APA Citation generator you can use easybib.com Paraphrasing and Quoting: What Is the Difference? There are two ways to integrate sources into your assignment: Paraphrasing is used to show that you understand what the author wrote. You must reword the passage, expressing the ideas in your own words, and not just change a few words here and there. Make sure to also include an in-text citation. Quoting is copying a selection from someone else’s work, phrasing it exactly as it was originally written. When quoting, place quotation marks (” “) around the selected passage to show where the quote begins and where it ends. Make sure to include an in-text citation. In-text Citations Have Two Formats Parenthetical – the author’s name and publication date (or equivalent information) appear in parentheses. For example: Falsely balanced news coverage can distort the public’s perception of expert consensus on an issue (Burnside, 2016). Narrative – the author’s name appears in running text and the date appears in parentheses immediately after the author’s name. For example: Burnside (2016) noted the dangers of falsely balanced news coverage. If you are referring to an idea from another work (paraphrasing or summarizing) but NOT directly quoting the material, you only must refer to the author and year of publication and not the page number in your in-text reference. (Burnside, 2016) If you are directly quoting or borrowing from another work, you should include the page number at the end of the parenthetical citation. For example, (Burnside, 2016, p. 199). Note: This APA guide reflects the latest version of the APA Publication Manual (i.e., APA 7).
