**10-15 minutes presentation in the format of an academic poster
(LO6) Produce a recorded reflexive presentation of appropriate length (10-15 mins) which outlines your position [knowledge] in relation to your chosen topic of interest, considering what bearing [important] this might have for your own future practice.
(LO7) within the recorded presentation, suggest recommendations for practice based on the finding of the research summary, considering relevant guidance and policy.
(LO8) Demonstrate clear, coherent and well-structured communication and verbal presentation skills.
ASSIGNMENT STEPS
1. Introduce your area of interest and formulate a research question
1.1. Describe the chosen area of interest and explain why it is essential for nursing.
Tip: Remember that this can be broader to start with, but it may need narrowing down; also, your area of interest must be related to your field of practice, e.g., adult, mental health, or learning disability.
1.2. Conduct a generic search and select an article highly relevant to your chosen topic.
Tip: Add the reference below alongside some critical aspects of your chosen topic that you may wish to consider for your mind map.
1.3. After you read the selected article, create a mind map that you are expected to add as a .pdf or a Word document below with an explanation.
Tip: Your mind map should capture some key points that are relevant to your topic (see exemplars in the NOW room). It can be based on the initial article identified above, but you can add more information as you progress throughout the module if needed. This is going to be Appendix 1 of your research workbook.
1.4. Finally, formulate a research question to explore your area of interest based on the PICO/PIO/PEO or other frameworks recommended for this purpose
Tip: You may wish to return to your research question and add new versions as you progress through the module. This may give you (and us) an indication of the logic behind the research question and prepare you for your dissertation.
Reflection (in preparation for your reflexive presentation)
Why is the chosen topic important for your future practice as a nurse?
Are there any other reasons that made you choose this topic? e.g. personal experiences, insights from placement, etc.
2. Report your search strategy and identify three qualitative and/or quantitative articles that are relevant to your chosen topic
2.1. What databases have been used to search for relevant literature and why?
Tip: A justification of your choices throughout your research can bring you additional marks.
2.2. What keywords or terms have been considered for searching for literature, and how have they been combined?
Tip: Refer to Boolean operators such as OR, AND, NOT, truncation symbols, etc. with references.
2.3. Add your search table here. (CINAHL and PUBMED)
2.4. Select three qualitative and/or quantitative journal articles (primary research) from your database search and include the references below alongside their research design (qualitative/quantitative).
Tip: This step is essential for a good start with your assignment otherwise, you may encounter problems later on. Please remember that literature reviews (systematic reviews, meta-analyses, meta-ethnographies, etc.) or other types of secondary research are not appropriate for this assignment. You may wish to add a .pdf of the articles for future reference.
Reflection (in preparation for your reflexive presentation)
What skills have you developed during this week, and how may they help you in your future practice?
What problems have you encountered during the literature searches, and what solutions have you found?
What feelings have you experienced at this stage of the process?
3: Ethical review of selected articles
3.1. Explain why ethics are important in research.
Tip: Research ethics share some commonalities with ethics in practice.
3.2. Write down the ethical principles in research with a brief explanation.
3.3. Write a summary of ethical considerations that you came across in your selection of three articles.
Tip: You can refer here to informed written or verbal consent, voluntary participation, right to withdraw, confidentiality, anonymity, etc. You can compare and contrast your articles in terms of ethics to elevate your critical writing. Also, you can refer to the ethical principles identified above (3.2.) and explain whether/how they were applied in your selected articles.
Reflection (in preparation for your reflexive presentation)
How could the ethics principles in research inspire you to practice more ethically?
4: Research summary and critical appraisal
4.1. Write a summary of the findings (results) from your selected qualitative and/or quantitative articles.
Tip: This summary should ideally help you answer the research question formulated in Week 1. You can compare and contrast your articles instead of presenting them individually to elevate your critical writing.
4.2. Explain whether qualitative or quantitative research is appropriate for investigating your chosen topic and why.
Tip: If you selected only qualitative (quantitative) articles, you may wish to consider how quantitative (qualitative) research could have enhanced (or not) the knowledge on your chosen topic. This may help you demonstrate critical thinking about the research methods.
4.3. Add your research summary table below with an explanation.
4.4. Add your critique table below with an explanation.
Reflection (in preparation for your reflexive presentation)
Think of some practice recommendations based on the key findings from your selected articles. This is essential for meeting the criteria to pass your assignment.
What research skills and knowledge have you developed this week? How could they help you enhance your practice?
What problems have you encountered, and how have you solved them? E.g., analysis, synthesis, critical thinking, etc.
5: Participation and co-production
5.1. Find a definition for co-production (with a reference).
Tip: Co-production is an approach used in different disciplines. For this task, focus on co-production in research.
5.2. What are the key elements of co-production or participatory research?
5.3. Justify whether your articles are (or not) examples of co-production. If not, how could co-production enhance the research findings?
Tip: Remember that knowledge of participation and co-production is essential to meet the learning outcome linked to this topic.
Reflection (in preparation for your reflexive presentation)
Why is co-production important in research, and how could this approach help you become a better practitioner? Think about the benefits of co-production and meaningful involvement in practice.
Glossary
Building your glossary
Research may not always seem accessible, and one of the reasons is the language used in academic journals, which can be intimidating at times. Inevitably, you will come across terms that you do not understand, and this is perfectly normal. Also, it is unlikely that all research-related aspects will be covered in this rather brief module. This should not stop you from building your own list of words that you can save in this glossary with brief explanations that may help you make more sense of the research terminology. This is also evidence of building your knowledge of research.
