My understanding of pediatric nursing is that not only can it be challenging its immensely rewarding, and my decision to pursue a career within this field has not been taken lightly.
Having worked and cared at length for children, I have truly realized the genuine magnitude of my desire to achieve success in a career that enables me to help and care for people, especially children. I am planning to return to education and Im unwavering in my pursuit of a career as a registered nurse.
In relation to choosing to study child nursing, my current level 3 BTEC in Health and Social Care has given me an in-depth understanding of the importance of caring for children and young people and how to understand additional needs and childrens development from birth. My studies have fed into my career choice and have proven my ability to perform well in related subjects.
I have recently been in the involvement of looking after children who have been hospitalized after having had the opportunity to volunteer at the Royal Derby Hospital, which contributed to approximately 50 hours. I enjoyed being involved in their care and the idea of playing an active role in helping them to recover greatly appeals to me. I witnessed the importance of nursing, the hardworking and dedicated nurses who are both caring and inspirational. A typical day’s duties would have consisted of me making the children feel welcomed and of course this was beneficial as it helped improved younger peoples experience in the hospital, I also assisted children in supporting their recovery, which reduced the chance of being re-admitted. Volunteering has shown me I have a natural aptitude for communicating and emphasizing with children and has provided me to learn new skills and maintain old ones.
I further developed my skills at Ridgeway Infant School where I worked with reception years 1 and 2 pupils. I thoroughly enjoyed interacting with the infants on their own level and gained a huge satisfaction from being able to help them learn and see them improve. Work experience revealed to me I can relate very well to children, and by having cared for a diverse spectrum of children I have gained valuable and tangible knowledge that will aid me in my studies. My experiences have improved my prospective nursing capabilities as the constant hands-on work has taught me to be resilient, how to read children and situations, and how to react quickly and successfully in an emergency.
In my free time, I enjoy regular exercise and playing sports; this has helped my ability to handle pressure, which is vital when working in a physically and emotionally demanding role. Playing sports has helped promote team play and allows me to get out of my competitive edge in a healthy way.
Overall, I have gained a considerable amount of experience working with young people which has given me plenty of qualities and skills to draw on in a pediatric nursing course at university and I am very much looking forward to expanding my practical knowledge, skills, and abilities by pursuing a degree in nursing. I hope to have the opportunity to further my education as I know I have the commitment, patience, and persistence to succeed.
