Pick one of the complimentary films (listed below) to watch. You will then write an essay (3-5 pages, double-spaced) comparing and contrasting the complimentary film to the main film. You should draw connections to the style of acting presented in the films, as well as the films’ overall themes, character development, and narrative structure. In what ways have sociopolitical and cultural shifts informed the acting? How do these two films demonstrate variations on our concept of “great” acting?
Think of this also as a persuasive essay! Why should people watch this film along with the main film? What moments stand out to you that you would want your classmates to see and study? Whatever you do, please do NOT write a plot summary of the film.
You can (and should!) utilize the readings. The paper should utilize course terminology and concepts. Additionally, you should describe specific scenes from both films to strengthen your arguments.
Format: Times New Roman, 12pt font, double-spaced. Please include a Works Cited page (MLA format) and cite the films as well as any additional resources you use.
Pairings:
1. Main film = Winter’s Bone, Complimentary film = Fruitvale Station (2013) OR Moonlight (2016)
2. Main film = Frances Ha, Complimentary film = A Woman Under the Influence (1974)
3. Main film = Fences, Complimentary film = August: Osage County (2013)
Those are related readings.
