Sketchbook Assignment # 3
Create a small work of art using as many elements of art you can and at least one Principle of Design,
This can be done in realism (representational), or abstract. Non Representational (which means that it does not appear to have any recognizable forms from reality) May be the easiest and most fun way to do this project. You could just play with the elements of art themselves, and compose them using a Principle of Design discussed in Chapter 5. You may make your piece using paint, pencil, collage, or sculpture that contains several elements of art and is composed in a way that incorporates a Principle of Design.
Post your project to the Discussion Board, with a description of the elements you used and the Principle of Design used. Make sure your jpeg is no larger than 300 pixels in any dimension before posting. Have fun with this, we will be making an art gallery of wonderful art!
Note The painting by the famous painter Kandinski, how it uses all of the elements of art, and how the large dark circle in the upper left side, creates “Emphasis”, it is the largest and darkest circle. That emphasis allows it to become a focal point. Emphasis is an important Principle of design.
Kandinsky, himself an accomplished musician, once said Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul. The concept that color and musical harmony are linked has a long history, intriguing scientists such as Sir Isaac Newton. Kandinsky used color in a highly theoretical way associating tone with timbre (the sound’s character), hue with pitch, and saturation with the volume of sound. He even claimed that when he saw color he heard music.
